Buddy Benches

The Allen Team sponsored a Buddy Bench for the four elementary schools in Lake Worth Beach. The Buddy Bench initiative is a global anti-bullying initiative to teach children inclusion.

A Buddy Bench placed in a playground is where children can go if they are feeling left out or don’t have anyone to play with. The children are taught the rules of the bench. That is, if a child sees someone on the bench, they invite them to play. If you sit down on the bench you must play with whoever asks you to join them. You cannot pick and choose who you want to play with. The Buddy Bench helps teach children tolerance and inclusion and fosters friendships that may not otherwise have happened.

“The first day after the installation of the Buddy Bench at one of the schools, a child who had been continually acting out reached out to the guidance counselor through his teacher and asked to meet her at the Buddy Bench to talk. It brought tears to my eyes to think that this tool was there in place so that this child felt he could reach out. The Buddy Bench did what it was supposed to do. It gave him that safe place, a judgment-free zone. It just doesn’t get any better than that,” said Erin Allen.
